A high-level committee headed by former president Ram Nath Kovind recommended holding simultaneous elections in the country. The panel suggested provisions and Constitutional amends for this. A two-step approach to sync the terms of state assemblies with that of Lok Sabha, along with introducing a single elector’s photo identity card has been suggested. Provisions for “full term” (General elections) and “unexpired term” (mid-term) polls, and 18 amendments to accommodate these provisions have been suggested by the committee. If everything goes well, then 2029 could possibly change and reshape India’s electoral landscape.
