SC Upholds Amendments Allowing Jallikattu & Kambala

Published On: May 18, 2023 - In a significant ruling, the Supreme Court has upheld amendments made by the governments of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Maharashtra to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, enabling the continuation of the traditional bull-taming sports of Jallikattu & Kambala.The five-judge Constitution bench, led by Justice K M Joseph, concluded that the amendments were in line with the Constitution and don’t contradict Supreme Court's 2014 ban on Jallikattu. The verdict has sparked discussions on the preservation of cultural heritage and the welfare of animals.
