The Supreme Court has upheld a Madras High Court order that denied a Scheduled Caste certificate to a Christian born woman who claimed to be a Hindu. Religious conversion merely to avail quota benefits without ‘actual belief’ in the other religion goes against the very object of reservation and would amount to fraud on the Constitution, ruled the apex court. The bench concluded the woman was seeking the certificate to get an Upper Division Clerk's job in Puducherry.
