Why has China banned export of rare earth minerals and metals to the US?

China has banned shipments of several minerals and metals used in semiconductor manufacturing and military applications to the US. This action by Beijing comes in the aftermath of the recent export controls from Washington. The retaliatory measure could cripple the US military industrial complex by disrupting its supply chains.
