Why is India Planning Airfields in the Lakshadweep?

The government of India has recently approved a major plan to build military airfields on the the Lakshadweep Islands. Plans were approved for two military airfields. Amidst growing Chinese activity in the Indian Ocean Region, the airfields will enhance India’s military prowess in the region and also expand reach of our armed forces.
